13TH FILM THEORY MOVIE
The movie isn’t really about the conspiracy theory. The film is canny enough-and Bay too good a filmmaker-for 13 Hours to be outright propaganda, but anyone invested in Benghazi conspiracy theories can easily find exactly what they’re looking for. It’s the audience that made American Sniper and Lone Survivor huge hits in January of 20, respectively, and the audience for whom the studio threw an enormous premiere in Arlington, Texas, on Tuesday. So while Bay’s primary interest in making 13 Hours may have been in telling the story of an Alamo-like siege (seriously, one character says “I’m tired of this Alamo 2012 bullshit”), the movie is targeted directly at those who have helped keep Benghazi a hot political topic for three years now. No movie about Benghazi can be apolitical, much less one from Bay, who has made the federal government the object of ridicule or the outright villain in multiple Transformers movies (all, fascinatingly, while fetishizing the military that is funded by that very government).
